Zapper Maintenance: A Guide to Keep Zapping!

mosquito and insect zapper

Zappers are an effective, trusted method of eliminating mosquitoes and other nuisance flying insects. Dynatrap® Insect Zappers provide non-stop protection against such pests. By taking care of your Dynatrap® Zapper, you can be sure that your device will work throughout the season and for many seasons to come. Follow these tips for simple and easy maintenance to keep your zapping power at max capacity!

Cleaning Your Zapper

Dynatrap® Insect Zappers use UV fluorescent light bulbs to lure insects to the device. Mosquitoes, moths, flies, mayflies, beetles, and other flying insects are naturally drawn to light, making it a perfect attractant. After being drawn into the zapper, these insects are eliminated by the electric grid.

Cleaning is vital to keeping your Dynatrap® Insect Zapper working. You must remove the debris that the zapped insects may leave behind so that buildup doesn't start to affect the power of the electric grid. This will keep your zapper working at peak power.

Here are the steps you should take to clean your zapper safely:

  1. Unplug the unit from the outlet to power off before cleaning.
  2. Remove the 4 screws from the bottom of the unit to release the access door.
  3. Gently tap the unit to get insects to drop out of the bottom of the unit. If available, use a leaf blower, vacuum, or similar device to remove insects.
  4. After cleaning, replace the access door and secure with the 4 screws.

During the height of insect season, you might find yourself cleaning your zapper more frequently. Check on your zapper and the collection of debris or dead bugs weekly to decide whether you need to clean the device out.

Always clean your Dynatrap® Insect Zapper at the end of the season before you store your device. This way, your zapper will be ready to go next season (and you won’t attract other pests with the collected insects).

Replacing Dynatrap® Insect Zapper Bulbs

Because zappers use UV light to lure insects, you must regularly replace the bulbs! Even if your zapper’s bulb is still giving off light that is visible to you, it might not be attracting insects as effectively because the UV light diminishes over time. The bulb life on Dynatrap® Insect Zappers is approximately 3,000 hours or about 4 months.

Replace your Dynatrap® bulbs using the following steps:

  1. Unplug the unit from the outlet to power off. Let the bulbs cool for a bit.
  2. Remove the 4 screws from the bottom of the unit to release the access door
  3. Cover your hand with a towel or other fabric to gently pull the bulb/s straight out of the unit
  4. Insert new bulb(s) into the socket until it’s fully seated.
  5. After changing bulb(s), replace the access door and secure with the 4 screws.

Zapping Tips

Besides maintaining your zapper and keeping it clean, there are other ways that you can help increase your catch rate on your property. Location is an essential factor in ensuring the successful elimination of flying insects.

You’ll want to find an outside outlet, as this device needs to be plugged in. Ideally, place this device 20-40 feet away from areas where people gather. This gives room to draw bugs away from you while eliminating other light sources that might be near the zapper. Hang this device about 6 ft above the ground to ensure it’s in insect flight paths. You can run your zapper continuously for 24/7 protection – rain or shine!

Remember to place your zapper away from other light sources. It will work best when its UV bulb is further away and isolated so that it can draw in the maximum number of insects.

Since the zappers work best when placed away from where people are sitting, you can pair it with a Dynatrap® repellent! This repellent device can be placed next to where people gather. Battery-powered, the DynaShield® is portable and can be taken anywhere outdoors where people are spending time. The shield pushes insects away with a natural blend of summer scents that mosquitoes find unappealing. As the shield protects your space from insects, it encourages the insects towards the lure of the Dynatrap® Insect Zapper, where they are eliminated.
