In the midst of a pandemic, many people are searching for cures. Many are also searching for the cause. Other outbreaks of diseases have been tied back to the mosquito, such as the Zika virus and Dengue fever. It’s hard to forget the effect those diseases had and continue to have, on many communities and the people in them. Now with the recent outbreak of COVID-19, people are wondering how this disease was able to spread so quickly. Could the mosquito be the culprit of yet another massive virus?
What is COVID-19?
COVID-19 is a respiratory virus which can live in the body 2 to 14 days before developing symptoms. People who are infected show signs of drowsiness, a fever, shortness of breath, and a dry cough. It is commonly spread through saliva and the discharge from coughs and sneezes. Thousands are now infected with the virus, some cases resulting in death. Started in Wuhan, China, COVID-19 has quickly spread across the world in a short period of time. With the number of infected people escalating, questions have started to arise as to how this virus is making its way across the world so quickly. The popular social media platform, Tik Tok, has many posts suggesting now that the weather is getting warmer, more people may become infected by mosquito bites.
Are Mosquitos to Blame?
The short answer is no. The World Health Organization has stated that there is no data or evidence that the spread of the virus is caused by mosquitoes. Since this is a respiratory disease, many are contracting it from touching their faces after coming in contact with infected surfaces or from being in close proximity with an infected person. A 6-foot radius is to be kept from people who are infected with the virus. Since it can take many days to show symptoms, the virus has spread quickly due to people not realizing they are carriers and unknowingly continuing the spread. Self-isolation, frequently washing hands, and avoiding touching your face are recommended to help contain the spread of the virus.
What is Being Done?
Government officials and the CDC have been making suggestions as to how to control the outbreak of COVID-19. Non-essential businesses have been closing down for a quarantine period and it is highly recommended for people to stay home. Gatherings of 10 or more people are discouraged from meeting and washing your hands frequently is essential. Precautions vary across states and even from city to city. This is a time where we all must come together by staying apart to decrease the chance of spreading the virus. Unless there is a need to go out of your home, you should stay in as a preventative measure. If you are showing signs of symptoms, stay away from others, cough into your elbow, and continuously wash your hands for at least 20 seconds.
